Getting My Grapes Ready

Tonight I will be spending Nochevieja, or New Years Eve doing the Spanish thing. This is probably for the best, because the American tradition of getting wasted on champagne and kissing people you don’t know, is actually pretty
lame.  Instead, I’ll be spending a quiet night in with the boyfriend’s family, eating grapes.

What? Eating grapes, you say?  What does that have to do with NYE?
Well, honestly, I don’t know, but it is important here in Spain.  With holidays, these connections don’t really matter.  What does the Easter Bunny have to do with Easter?  We do these things because…well…we just do.
You can even get your lucky grapes, canned and ready for midnight.

As far as I know, eating 12 grapes in 12 seconds, one with each chime of the clock, brings luck.  You know, if you are lucky enough to not choke to death while completing the act.  In my mind, it is some kind of nationwide version of the Chubby Bunny game. (A game we played as kids, where you stuff as many marshmallows into your mouth  like a hamster and attempt to say ‘Chubby Bunny’)
Tomorrow will be the start of a new year, for all of us.  I think of all the change that has happened over the entire year and I feel confident that I have found ‘my place’ here in Spain.  2012 has been quite the life changer for me, and I am looking forward to the roller coaster ride that will be 2013!   ¡Feliz año nuevo a todos!
